The Name of The Game
When Console gaming first surfaced onto the Game Market it offered users a form of interactive multimedia entertainment as it had never existed before; at first with Cartridge devices, and later on as technology and graphics advanced, we were introduced to CD’s and higher capacity DVDs, and Blu-ray Disc’s which were used by PlayStation 3.
Such Games offered manipulable images, which were displayed on a users console device or television screen, however most of the newer game consoles, including the PSP, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, PS Vita and Wii were able to access the Internet and therefore run MMO ( massively multiplayer online) games where players could play simultaneously.
Video or Online Gaming?
Now, with recent computerized technological and graphic advancements, games and game demos are allowed to be downloaded directly onto a users game console via the Internet. As computer game developers applied MMOG ( massively multiplayer online games ) ideas towards other computer and video game genres and new acronyms began to develop, such as MMORTS.
The online multi-player gaming genre has also recently begun to break into the mobile phone market; such as, Samurai Romanesque which is set in feudal Japan, and Biting Bit’s Micro-Monster which features online and bluetooth multi-player gaming. Smart Cell Technology is in development for Shadow of Legend, which will allow gamers to continue their game on their mobile device when away from their PC.
Amongst many of the gaming genres which exist, Science fiction is one of the most pre-dominant popular genres when it comes to multi-player online gaming; featuring games such as Mankind, Anarchy Online, Eve Online, Star Wars Galaxies and The Matrix Online. However, when it comes to massively multi-player online games, the main focus and objective is ” socialization” rather than the objective-based game-play.
Virtual Reality vs. Social Gaming
There has been a great deal of overlap in terminology when it comes to “online communities” and “virtual worlds”, and while they share many aspects of traditional video games, online network games often employ additional ones that make them distinct. Traditionally however- massively multi-player online games are mostly oriented to be casual social games, and are designed to appeal to all computer users or to fans of another game genre, and can be played with only a small amount of time every day.
